Gwanaksa Dormitory Application...Deadline!
Hello Folks,
For those who find this post, and want to know more about the process for being accepted in the Gwanaksa dormitory (i.e. the dormitory within the SNU campus), you got to the right page. However, I tell you, sleep in Gwanaksa is not as easy as it is expected from exchange students.
First things first: as you may know, exchange students have the priority when it comes to dormitory rooms and so on. You have to fill the online application form, and wait for the results. After a couple of days, you'll know that you are selected to have a room, and it's at this moment when the things get messy.
Between the day of the results and the deadline (so within 3 days!), you have to :
- Send all the documents (Chest X-ray and a Passport copy) to Seoul
- Pay the fees for the whole SEMESTER before the deadline (to me, the most stressful thing because you don't control the wire transfer and don't know exactly when it will arrive).
Just so ridiculous, truthfully, I know some of the exchange students that didn't meet the deadlines and now have to find another accomodation, which is quite annoying...
So for those who are going abroad next year at SNU: Send the documents one or two weeks before the results. It doesn't matter if the administration receive it in advance, and you'll not have to do it 3 days before the deadline. And MOST IMPORTANT: pay the fees right away after you receive the confirmation from gwanaksa that you got a room. I remember that I directly go to my bank to wire transfer the fees, and after that, send an email with a copy of the receipt, just to make sure that they will not cancel my room.
Yeah... It was so stressful, but hopefully, I got my room, and in a next post, I will show you the room itself and the campus.
Oh I almost forgot, but you may be wondering the reasons as to why Gwanaksa dormitory put tough conditions. Simple... Because it's cheap (400 euros or roughly 300$ for the whole semester, the chespest accomodation in Seoul hands down), and there is a fierce demand even from native students (you cannot imagine the lengh of the waiting list).
Hope that this will help, if you have any questions, feel free to ask it in the comment section below.

RépondreSupprimer:( Do you know if they change the rules ?
Another question, you have to pay a deposit plus those 400 euros? Or the deposit is included in the 400 fee ? Do they return the deposit to us ??
Thank you so much !

RépondreSupprimerHi, well they usually tell that you need to be in time (no exception for the deadline), otherwise it's true that you may not get a room in the dorms, but if you respect everything, there should be no problem.
RépondreSupprimerI don't remember quite exactly the actual fees, but last year, I paid 560 000 Won and I think the deposit was included. Just check on their website to be sure. Or on the bill you will receive when you apply.
Good day!
RépondreSupprimerI would like to ask, how much did you spent for one semester being an exchange student studying in Seoul National University including dormitory, foods and other expenses?
Thank you!
Hello!
RépondreSupprimerWaoh, long time ago so I can roughly remember but I guess food = 200e per month (not very expensive to go to restaurants) + subway = 30e per month.
Dorm is about 400 euros for the whole semester.
You can live well if you have more than 400e/month
